The oldest of four children, Alberto Giacometti<\/strong> was born in 1901 in Switzerland, in a village near the Italian border. His father encouraged him to paint from an early age; he then studied at the Ecole des Beaux-arts<\/strong> in Geneva before leaving for Paris in 1922. Drawn to sculpture<\/strong>, he studied under Antoine Bourdelle<\/strong> at the Acad\u00e9mie de la Grande Chaumi\u00e8re and from 1925 exhibited regularly in salons.<\/p>\n

Le jeune sculpteur commence \u00e0 exposer \u00e9pisodiquement son travail dans les salons \u00e0 partir de 1925. Peu connu encore, il vit et travaille dans un petit atelier nich\u00e9 dans le 14e arrondissement<\/strong>, o\u00f9 le rejoint son jeune fr\u00e8re Diego<\/strong> en 1930. Les deux fr\u00e8res ainsi r\u00e9unis\u00a0travaillent ensemble, l\u2019ain\u00e9 concevant, le cadet, protecteur, \u00e9tant \u00ab son autre paire de mains \u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

C\u2019est \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque que les Giacometti<\/strong> font la connaissance de Jean-Michel Frank<\/strong> \u00e0 l\u2019occasion du salon des Tuileries. Le d\u00e9corateur fait alors r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement appel au talent des deux fr\u00e8res, qui con\u00e7oivent pour lui principalement des luminaires et des accessoires. De cette collaboration naissent des pi\u00e8ces \u00e0 la fois fortes et fantaisistes, parfois surr\u00e9alistes et toujours d\u2019une grande modernit\u00e9. Destin\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00eatre diffus\u00e9s ou r\u00e9alis\u00e9s sur commande, la plupart des objets sont r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en pl\u00e2tre, la couleur des patines allant du blanc pur \u00e0 l\u2019or, en passant par le bleu, le jaune et le noir. Seuls les lampadaires sont coul\u00e9s en bronze par le fondeur Alexis Rudier, les patines \u00e9tant elles aussi tr\u00e8s travaill\u00e9es, brunes, or, vert antique… Embl\u00e9matiques de l\u2019esth\u00e9tique de Frank<\/strong>, ces pi\u00e8ces sont command\u00e9es par les plus grands collectionneurs de l\u2019\u00e9poque, les Noailles<\/strong>, Pierre David-Weill<\/strong>, Elsa Schiaparelli<\/strong>, Guerlain<\/strong>, les Rockefeller<\/strong>, Jorge Born<\/strong>… Rest\u00e9 en Suisse pendant la guerre, Alberto<\/strong> rejoint Diego<\/strong> \u00e0 Paris en 1945 o\u00f9 il retrouve son atelier intact. Ils reprennent le travail main dans la main et re\u00e7oivent rapidement de nouvelles commandes.<\/p>\n

Jean-Michel Frank \u00e9tant d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en 1941, Alberto<\/strong> et Diego<\/strong> r\u00e9cup\u00e8rent leurs pl\u00e2tres et leurs mod\u00e8les. Ce sont les Maeght<\/strong> qui, pour d\u00e9corer leur appartement de l\u2019avenue Foch<\/strong>, demandent aux Giacometti<\/strong> de travailler \u00e0 une nouvelle \u00e9dition de leurs lampadaires en bronze, devenus des classiques. Le marchand Pierre Matisse suit le mouvement et en pr\u00e9sente r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement quelques exemplaires dans sa galerie<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

de New York, en 1934, et Jacques Adnet<\/strong> d\u00e9cide de les commercialiser dans sa Galerie des arts fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 Paris dans les ann\u00e9es 1950. Le succ\u00e8s de ces incroyables luminaires sculpturaux ne se d\u00e9ment pas apr\u00e8s guerre. Au contraire ! Les plus grands collectionneurs, esth\u00e8tes et d\u00e9corateurs n\u2019auront de cesse de s\u2019entourer de ces pi\u00e8ces. D\u00e8s 1962 Diego<\/strong> fait fondre les lampadaires par Susse fr\u00e8res sous son contr\u00f4le. Alberto<\/strong> d\u00e9c\u00e8de en 1966.<\/p>\n

Tout juste cinquante ans apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9c\u00e8s du sculpteur, ses \u0153uvres ont toujours autant d\u2019impact et de succ\u00e8s aupr\u00e8s des grands collectionneurs. Le lampadaire mod\u00e8le \u2018Figure\u2019 que nous pr\u00e9sentons fait partie de ses cr\u00e9ations embl\u00e9matiques pour Jean-Michel Frank<\/strong>. Cette pi\u00e8ce reste encore aujourd\u2019hui d\u2019une parfaite \u00e9l\u00e9gance et d\u2019une grande modernit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Aujourd\u2019hui, les \u0153uvres d\u2019Alberto Giacometti<\/strong> font partie des collections permanentes des mus\u00e9es les plus prestigieux au monde comme le MoMA de San Francisco et de New York, le Metropolitan Museum of Art et le Guggenheim Museum de New York, le Centre Pompidou et le Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs \u00e0 Paris, la Tate Modern \u00e0 Londres, parmi bien d\u2019autres. Mais aussi des collections permanentes des plus grandes fondations d\u2019art comme la Fondation Maeght \u00e0 Saint Paul de Vence en France, la Fondation Beyeler \u00e0 B\u00e2le en Suisse ou encore la Frederick R. Weisman Art Fondation \u00e0 Los Angeles. Depuis les ann\u00e9es 1930, la cote de cet artiste, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de ses sculptures ou de ses \u0153uvres r\u00e9alis\u00e9es pour Jean-Michel Frank<\/strong>, n\u2019a fait qu\u2019augmenter, notamment cette ann\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019occasion du cinquantenaire de sa mort, o\u00f9 des pi\u00e8ces du m\u00eame mod\u00e8le que le n\u00f4tre ont atteint des prix record.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
