In 1948, Picasso<\/strong> moved to Vallauris<\/strong> where he stayed until 1955. There he built a body of ceramic work which still marks by its size and fascinates by its inventiveness.
\nIt was in 1946, while visiting the annual exhibition of the potters of Vallauris<\/strong>, situated on the shores of this Mediterranean sea steeped in culture and tradition, that Picasso<\/strong>, curious about everything, carried out his first ceramic experiments when he met Suzanne<\/strong> and Georges Rami\u00e9<\/strong>, owners of a ceramics factory \u2013 the Madoura workshop<\/strong>. Madoura<\/strong> is an acronym<\/strong> composed of the first syllables of the words Maison<\/strong>, Douly<\/strong> and Rami\u00e9<\/strong>. Douly<\/strong> being the birth name of Suzanne Rami\u00e9<\/strong>, its founder and owner.<\/p>\n

Picasso <\/strong>moved with Fran\u00e7oise <\/strong>to Vallauris <\/strong>the following year, in 1948, he decided to devote himself to this activity which offered him new creative perspectives: the malleability of clay and the magic of firing in the kiln which reveals the bright colours of the glaze and the brilliance of the varnishes. His practice <\/strong>is unorthodox<\/strong>. Picasso<\/strong>, a sculptor<\/strong>, shaped the clay with fauna and nymph, cast the clay as one does bronze, tirelessly decorated dishes and plates with his favourite themes (bullfighting, women, owls, goats\u2026), used the most unexpected supports (fragments of pignates, gazelles \u2013 firing material \u2013 or broken bricks), invented white pastes which are unglazed ceramics decorated with relief elements. For Picasso<\/strong>, ceramics was by no means a minor art.
\nThe following twenty years<\/strong> are an intense period<\/strong> of ceramics production<\/strong> estimated at nearly 4,500 pieces<\/strong>. The Madoura workshop was the exclusive publisher of Picasso<\/strong>\u2019s ceramic work.
\nThe \u00abbearded man\u2019s wife\u00bb is the reflection of this intense production of Picasso<\/strong>\u2019s which occupied him during the last years of his life.<\/p>\n
