N\u00e9 sur la c\u00f4te d\u2019Azur en 1931, Fran\u00e7ois Th\u00e9venin est un artiste prot\u00e9iforme, oscillant entre architecture, sculpture, design et po\u00e9sie au moyen de son mat\u00e9riau de pr\u00e9dilection, le m\u00e9tal.<\/p>\n

Form\u00e9 aux Beaux-arts de Paris dans les ann\u00e9es 1950, il y rencontre sa future \u00e9pouse et associ\u00e9e Gis\u00e8le Sidoti dite Sido.<\/p>\n

En 1958, apr\u00e8s son service militaire, Fran\u00e7ois et Sido partent s\u2019installer dans le sud, \u00e0 Cannes-la-Bocca, o\u00f9 se trouve toujours leur maison-atelier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Un an plus tard le couple fait la connaissance de l\u2019architecte Jacques Cou\u00eblle. C\u2019est le d\u00e9but d\u2019une importante collaboration qui donne naissance \u00e0 ce qu\u2019ils ont appel\u00e9 les \u00ab\u00a0maisons-paysages\u00a0\u00bb, des villas semblables \u00e0 des cavernes troglodytes enti\u00e8rement r\u00e9alis\u00e9es en b\u00e9ton sculpt\u00e9. La philosophie de ce style architectural en vogue dans les ann\u00e9es 1960, en r\u00e9action \u00e0 l\u2019aspect froid et lin\u00e9aire du Style International, consiste \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser des demeures aux lignes organiques qui s\u2019int\u00e8grent parfaitement \u00e0 leur environnement naturel, comme sorties de terre. C\u2019est \u00e0 Castellaras, village cach\u00e9 dans l\u2019arri\u00e8re-pays proven\u00e7al, qu\u2019ils r\u00e9alisent ensemble de luxueuses villas pour une riche client\u00e8le, lasse des villas n\u00e9oclassiques de la c\u00f4te d\u2019Azur. Jacques Cou\u00eblle sculpte dans le b\u00e9ton les formes sinueuses des murs, des escaliers, des toits, offrant une circulation fluide aux habitants. Les Th\u00e9venin viennent y int\u00e9grer des pi\u00e8ces de mobilier en m\u00e9tal forg\u00e9, pli\u00e9, sculpt\u00e9, aux accents profond\u00e9ment po\u00e9tiques, directement issus d\u2019un monde v\u00e9g\u00e9tal fantasmagorique\u00a0: rampes semblables \u00e0 des lianes, pi\u00e9tements de table formant des troncs d\u2019arbre noueux, appliques et vitraux laissant filtrer la lumi\u00e8re en apportant de la couleur \u00e0 travers d\u2019\u00e9pais \u00e9clats de verre taill\u00e9s au burin, ou encore des chaises en fer forg\u00e9 tout droit sorties des contes de Grimm.<\/p>\n

Le couple de sculpteurs donne ainsi vie au m\u00e9tal par la force de leur bras, au moyen de techniques ancestrales de ferronnerie, de chaudronnerie, de dinanderie, en collaboration avec des artisans locaux. La fronti\u00e8re se fait alors plus \u00e9troite entre la forme et la fonction, entre l\u2019objet et la sculpture, entre la douceur des sujets et la force de la main qui les a cr\u00e9\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Cou\u00eblle et les Th\u00e9venin associent \u00e9galement leurs talents \u00e0 la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019autres villas, notamment en Sardaigne, sur la Costa Smeralda.<\/p>\n

Le style architectural de Jacques Cou\u00eblle fait nombre d\u2019\u00e9mules, dont l\u2019un de ses \u00e9l\u00e8ves, Antti Lovag, qui r\u00e9alisera notamment le fameux \u00ab\u00a0Palais Bulles\u00a0\u00bb de Pierre Cardin.<\/p>\n

Les ann\u00e9es 1960 sont pour Fran\u00e7ois et Sido une p\u00e9riode de cr\u00e9ation dense. Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 la r\u00e9alisation des \u00ab\u00a0maisons-paysages\u00a0\u00bb, le couple est sollicit\u00e9 pour des commandes priv\u00e9es et publiques prestigieuses. Leur amiti\u00e9 avec Jacques Cou\u00eblle les am\u00e8ne \u00e0 rencontrer des personnalit\u00e9s du monde artistique et litt\u00e9raire comme Jean Cocteau, pour lequel ils r\u00e9alisent le premier des douze cadrans solaires du village de Coaraze, \u00ab\u00a0Les L\u00e9zards \u00bb, Pablo Picasso, qui vient visiter leur maison-atelier en 1963, Jacques Pr\u00e9vert, Serge Reggiani, ou encore Brassa\u00ef, qui r\u00e9digera la pr\u00e9face de leur premi\u00e8re grande exposition \u00e0 la galerie Drouant \u00e0 Paris en 1973.<\/p>\n

Des projets monumentaux voient \u00e9galement le jour\u00a0: un bas-relief en m\u00e9tal de 3 m\u00e8tres de haut pour l\u2019agence d\u2019Air France \u00e0 Santiago du Chili, un monument en fer et aluminium de 6 m\u00e8tres de haut pour la Caisse des D\u00e9p\u00f4ts et Consignations de Nice, une mosa\u00efque de m\u00e9tal pour un bassin d\u00e9coratif au mas Sainte-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne \u00e0 Grasse ou encore deux panneaux en bronze grav\u00e9 pour l\u2019entr\u00e9e de la prestigieuse tour \u00ab\u00a0Evasion 2000\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 Paris.<\/p>\n

Les commandes affluent et se prolongent dans les ann\u00e9es 1970, d\u00e9cennie qui marque notamment l\u2019aboutissement de leurs recherches sur la gravure \u00e0 l\u2019eau forte sur acier inoxydable. C\u2019est \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque que le couple entame une autre collaboration architecturale avec le fils de Jacques Cou\u00eblle, Savin.<\/p>\n

En 1973 l\u2019\u0153uvre sculpt\u00e9 des Th\u00e9venin est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019occasion d\u2019une exposition \u00e0 la galerie Drouant \u00e0 Paris, prolong\u00e9e par une exposition au Ch\u00e2teau de la Treyne \u00e0 Souillac. Puis les expositions et Grand Prix s\u2019encha\u00eenent, parall\u00e8lement aux nouvelles commandes\u00a0: un plafond de 100 m2 pour la salle de spectacle du Palm Beach Casino \u00e0 Cannes, une tapisserie monumentale pour l\u2019Ecole d\u2019Artillerie de Draguignan, un planisph\u00e8re et des sculptures pour le paquebot Fairsky IV aux Antilles command\u00e9s par la compagnie Sitmar…<\/p>\n

En 1983 le peintre espagnol Salvador Dali leur confie la conception, \u00e0 partir de ses dessins, de l\u2019Ange Surr\u00e9aliste<\/em> de l\u2019Ange Cubiste<\/em> et de la T\u00eate de Beethoven<\/em>.<\/p>\n

L\u2019ann\u00e9e 1986 est marqu\u00e9e par le d\u00e9c\u00e8s de Sido.<\/p>\n

Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1990, Fran\u00e7ois perp\u00e9tue seul le travail commenc\u00e9 avec Jacques Cou\u00eblle et r\u00e9alise en collaboration avec Savin Cou\u00eblle de nouvelles \u00ab\u00a0maisons-paysages\u00a0\u00bb en Nouvelle-Z\u00e9lande, en Sardaigne, en France et l\u2019accompagne sur de nombreux autres chantiers internationaux. L\u2019ensemble mobilier que nous pr\u00e9sentons ici provient de l\u2019un de ces luxueux projets pour une villa nich\u00e9e sur les hauteurs de Cannes, appel\u00e9e \u00ab\u00a0Le Clos du Paradis\u00a0\u00bb, non loin du village de Castellaras, comme un retour aux sources.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en 2016, nous souhaitions rendre hommage \u00e0 ce sculpteur-designer libre de toute \u00e9tiquette, \u00e0 son inspiration po\u00e9tique et son g\u00e9nie technique.<\/p>\n
