Alexandre Noll, Macassar ebony tray
Alexandre Noll (1890-1970)
Macassar ebony tray
Circa 1950
Macassar ebony sculpted tray. Signed “A. Noll“ under the base.
This sculpted ebeony tray is particularly interesting and reflects Alexandre Noll’s style very well who has produced throughout his carreer “furniture-sculpture“ or “object-sculpture“. The Macassar ebony is one of his favorite wood species. Alexandre Noll likes this wood for its motif which is part of the aesthetic of the piece. For him, “we must never upset the Nature“. So, he sculpts, cuts, carves, polishes the wood to underline, glorify the ebony tones and to give all the necessary shape of the volume.
