Gilbert Poillerat, Circular table
Gilbert Poillerat (1902-1988)
Circular table
circa 1950
This table features a basket-style base whose meticulous workmanship in patinated wrought iron and gilded metal, finely curved and modulated, perfectly illustrates Gilbert Poillerat’s mastery of artistic ironwork.
The lacquered top has been remade after a model by Maxime Old.This precise drawing, which strives for accuracy and harmony in its proportions, is a wonderful example of Gilbert Poillerat’s ‘contemporary classicism’. From the 1940s onwards, the artist abandoned his baroque and rococo-inspired repertoire in favour of a more neoclassical voca- bulary, which was even more restrained than the purity that this style already represented at the time.
